I stumbled on this book while perusing a bookshelf at a family cottage in Southwest Michigan. Written in 1905, it centers on a Northern businessman who comes to Alabama to run an electric power plant around the turn of the century. In many ways, it is a Jane Austenesque romantic melodrama with insightful and detailed descriptions of the personal interactions of the romantic leads.
What makes the book particularly interesting and timely is that the obstacles to true love arise from post-Civil War tensions between North and South, particularly with regard to the specter of racial equality. The Northerner is decent literature, but is even better for a history class.
It is often difficult, intriguingly so, to get a firm grasp of where the author's sympathies lie as she allows various characters to have their say, tho in the end she seems to lean more towards decrying the evils of racial oppression than for preserving the traditional social order." Goodreads.
